Stephen Colbert teaches Sunday School!

If you aren’t watching The Colbert Report, you are truly missing out. Even as the Writer’s Strike has raged on, Colbert has still entertained. This is perhaps some of his best work as he chats with the author of The Lucifer Effect. He refutes the premise of the book in a sound and informed argument and closes out with the ultimate punctuator. Enjoy!

Not Maui

Filed under: Television, Travel — Bill Eisenhauer at 8:20 pm on Monday, October 8, 2007

On the October 8th episode of Heroes we were innocently watching when a beach scene appeared before us. Well, it was none other than Bali Hai in the background and thus it was likely Tunnels Beach on Kauai. When asked where they were, the female character in the scene answered “Maui” which was incorrect.

Its okay to take poetic license, I guess, but I had to wonder why Maui was any better choice than Kauai. If this is the prevailing opinion, then let it be so, for we will be happy to have Kauai be Hawaii’s best kept secret.

Given the time between blog entries, you might think I have stowed away on that secret island. Alas, not so. Its been an interesting few months and I am overdue an update on these parts. Stay tuned.

Discovering The Colbert Report

Filed under: Television — Bill Eisenhauer at 11:37 pm on Tuesday, June 5, 2007

While on vacation, Suzanne and I stumbled upon a 30-minute political satire TV show called The Colbert Report which produced quite a few laugh-out-loud moments. And after reviewing all the content on Wikipedia about the show, I can’t help but feel that I’m late to the party again (I know, shocker!).

We’ve now watched three shows and its been consistently hilarious. My favorite parts are the interviews where Colbert shows an amazing ability to run circles around his interviewees. Its smart comedy and Colbert’s timing is near perfect.

This is a must-Tivo in my household…especially in the Summer where TV completely sucks.

CBS needs to get a clue

This may sound like sour grapes since I’m in a foul mood from the Aggie loss, but I feel I must publicly criticize CBS for its broadcast coverage of this game today.

In the Dallas market, no other game is as important as the LSU vs. Texas A&M game due to its regional interest.  And yet, CBS inconsiderately shifted the broadcast to other games that we’re nearing their conclusions.  Unfortunately, they did a very poor job of resetting the situation when they returned to the A&M game.

For instance, Acie Law picked up a second foul early in the first half while we were away, but that important detail was not communicated to us viewers.  That’s a critical strategic development in a game of this magnitude.

In past years, I recall them going to a picture-in-picture approach where both games could be monitored.  Apparently that technology has been lost this year as they are making the hard-switch to the other game.

So CBS…thumbs down to you!

“Lost” did not disappoint…

Filed under: Television — Bill Eisenhauer at 12:54 pm on Thursday, September 22, 2005

SPOILER ALERT:  Read no farther if you haven’t seen the first episode.

The season premier of "Lost" did not disappoint last night as there are now new questions and more intrigue.  We now know a little bit more about what was within the hatch.  If you watched carefully, you noted that the inside of the hatch said "QUARANTINED".  The castaways didn’t remark much about this, but I think the side of the hatch that the message appeared on is critical.  In my opinion, the message tells he/they who are within, that the outside is quarantined.  I have no idea if this is accurate or even meaningful, but it is a subtlety that I, at least, wondered about.

We also had wondered what was being injected into the arm of the hatch inhabitant.  We slowed it down to frame-by-frame and could only make out "RX-1, For Injection Only".  And of course, we’re led to believe the inhabitant is the same guy who was running the stands with Jack.  The mystery behind his strange and hugely coincidental (or is it?) presence within the hatch was this episode’s cliffhanger.  Equally curious is his influence on the healing of the woman from the accident.  You will recall that this is the woman that Jack eventually marries — we found this out last year, but we got more of the history last night.

So all in all, a satisfying first episode and the ride continues…

“Lost” Returns

Filed under: Television — Bill Eisenhauer at 1:50 pm on Wednesday, September 21, 2005

We are just hours from the season premier of "Lost".  If you aren’t on board (ever so slight pun there) already, you have two options.

  1. Watch the hour-long catch-me-up show that airs prior to the premiere tonight
  2. Tivo tonight’s premier and quickly purchase and watch the season one DVD that is available now.

Suzanne and I were lucky enough to latch onto this show from its pilot last year through its season finale.  It was a great ride and since it won an Emmy, its obvious that we weren’t alone in our opinion.

It was great fun to learn more about the characters each week.  The show makes ample use of flashbacks to develop its characters.  In some cases, the flashbacks are from years ago and profile a life-changing moment in a character’s life.  In other cases, the flashbacks are only days old and provide context to how the character came to be on the flight and how they may have previously interacted with the other soon-to-be survivors.

The island also holds some supernatural phenomenons that have not yet been explained.  For those who don’t believe in such things, don’t worry, it doesn’t interfere with the entertainment value of the show.  This is to say that while the survivors do get harrassed by a perceived monster from time to time, this is only a minor part of the story.  The island’s real mysteries concern fate and destination along with its ability to free people of their limitations (both physical and mental).  I know that sounds pretty mysterious, but I’m being purposefully vague so as not to spoil it for any who choose to jump on board.

So tonight we are looking forward to more of the island’s secrets revealed…join us!

Lost: Stranded with no new Episodes

Filed under: Television — Bill Eisenhauer at 1:27 pm on Wednesday, April 20, 2005

I’m so addicted to "Lost" right now and they are killing me with their break from new episodes!  This is now the third week in a row of repeats.  If "Lost" were a drug, I’d be in a fetal position in the corner of a room, sweating, and rocking like a baby.  I’m in full withdrawal now and awaiting my next fix…

Madden 2005 has a Great Commercial

Filed under: Television — Bill Eisenhauer at 7:59 am on Tuesday, August 17, 2004

I rarely watch commercials these days because I record everything with my Tivo-like technology (UltimateTV). However, I enjoyed the new Madden 2005 commercial with Ray Lewis.

The commercial is set on the football field and its Ray and his team trying to defend another team from getting a first down. You can see the virtual yellow first-down marker on the field — and its not so virtual. Ray bends down and picks it up and says, “Is this what you want?!” And then he moves it several yards down the field.

Very creative…
